Frutillar
frutillar music teatro del lagosOne thing that many small towns lack in Chile is a true sustained and organic community wide commitment to cultural enrichment. Frutillar is one of the great exceptions to this in Southern Chile, with a long community tradition of music and arts dating back to the founding of the town by German settlers. The town is pervaded by sculptures dedicated to music, music schools, and musical symbols pop up on all the tourist trinkets. Now with the nearly completed Teatro del Lago concert hall and cultural center, Frutillar will have the distinction of having one of the most advanced music venues found anywhere in Chile. Not bad for a small town of just a few thousand residents. It is set to turn the little town of Frutillar in to the Music capital of Chile.

College Entrance Exams PSU
Chile Relocation and Retirement Articles

ExamsinChileThe current college entrance exam in Chile, known as the Prueba de Seleccion Universitaria (PSU), has been used since 2003 and replaces the SIES and the PAA. The majority of universities use this exam as entrance requirements for college applicants. The test results are only valid for one year then have to taken again. The results are not only used by individuals seeking entrance into colleges but by all schools in Chile as a “ranking” within Chile. These rankings are published every year and can be used as a method of choosing a school. All schools with more than 20 students sitting for the exam are considered in these rankings. It is not obligatory to sit for these exams but the majority of graduating students do sit for the exam. The individuals results can also be used on job resumes. There is a lot of pressure surrounding the subject of the PSU and much preparation is needed.

Real Direct Foreign Investment in Chile
Chile Relocation and Retirement Articles
key“Direct Foreign Investment” is often a political buzz term used to describe large international institutions pumping money in to the hands of other large international institutions. In Southern Chile, and especially the Patagonia, “direct foreign investment” has a totally different meaning. It comes in the form of foreigners buying property to retire in Chile, building houses in Chile, or simply paying their housekeeper. Money that often comes out of an ATM from a foreign bank and directly in to the pockets of people that live in the communities. This is international trade that often happens in just a few seconds. We want to take a brief look at how communities benefit from these foreign investors in Chile, and how direct foreign investment in Chile works in the South.

hotel_ayacara-FrutillarAyacara Hotel in Frutillar, Chile is one of the real wonders among Bed and Breakfast Style hotels in Southern Chile. Many locations in Southern Chile use the words “hotel” or “bed & breakfast” in their descriptions, but very few deliver on it in any internationally recognizable way. For now, let's just call the Ayacara a boutique hotel.

We spent three great days at the Ayacara on the shores of lake Llanquihue in Frutillar. The spectacular view from the front door of the hotel includes a snow capped volcano reflecting in the lake. That view alone is worth the price of admission.  You however get much more for your money.
