Araucanía Andina Travel and Living Guide by All Southern Chile
One of the truly untouched parts of the World is the Araucanía Andina Region. Access to this part of Chile's IX region is at times a lot of bumpy dirt roads; however, this is in part what has kept this area protected. The jewel at the heart of this area is Conguillío National Park, home of the ancient Araucarias Trees. At first look, they appear to be from an alien planet, and their age seems to endorse this idea with hundreds of years it took to grow even the small ones.

National Parks
The national parks in this area are: Conguillío National Park, Tolhuaca National Park, Malleco National Reserve, Malalcahuello-Nalcas National Reserve, Alto Biobío National Reserve.

Communities
Around the parks, you will find the towns of Cunco, Curacautín, Lonquimay, Melipeuco, Victoria, and Vilcún. They are great jumping off points for day trips into the parks and reserves, fly fishing, skiing, or visiting the hot springs.

Nevados de SollipulliThe Nevados de Sollipulli resort ( formerly eco-camp sollipulli ) is one of the most interesting luxury adventures that we have seen in southern Chile since the Huilo Huilo resort. Sollipulli is a camp composed of a series of interconnecting fixed luxury dome tents built at the foot of the Sollipulli Volcano in the heart of the Araucanía Andina region of Chile. That is just the start of what Nevados de Sollipulli has going for it.

Araucan Andina When we first started All Southern Chile, some of the first towns we visited were in the Araucanía Andina region of Chile. Everywhere we went people kept talking about this Araucania Andina Association that was promoting tourism in the region; however, no one seemed to know exactly where it was or exactly what it was. We were not sure if they were government, private, or perhaps the mafia. After many months of talking to people, phone calls, and knocking on doors, we finally tracked down this illusive group known as the Araucanía Andina. Now the question is, what exactly is it they do?

To be honest, the local people are as much a tourist attraction
as the natural wonders of southern Chile.
Southern Chile obviously has some great hidden treasures; however, what is also hidden is the way to get to those destinations. Riding rural buses is fine for backpackers, but for everyone else looking to travel in a bit more comfort and make the most of their time in Southern Chile they will need to hire a tour guide. We want to take a look at one southern Chilean tour agency Multi Tour, and what they have to offer.  chile volcano

If you are looking for the quiet life, Vilcún has plenty of it. Small, sleepy, but not really off the beaten path. Vilcún is one of those small gateway communities to some of the greatest natural attractions in the South of Chile. Located 38 Km northeast of Temuco, it takes about a 45 min by car or 1 hours by bus to reach Vilcún. From Vilcún, you can reach the Llaima Volcano and Conguillio National Park in another 30-45 min drive. This makes Vilcún a perfect place to stay when skiing on the Volcano or exploring the National Park.

In the Araucanía Andina, Expect the word “hotel” to be associated with better quality. In the middle to budget level, we would recommend “Pensions”, “Hostels”, and “Hospedaje”.  In terms of Hostels, do not expect to find Hostels in the sense of European backpacker sorts of places with dormitory and bars. There are a few, but not many. None the less, they often are clean, respectable, friendly, and a very good deal in Southern Chile. Sometimes, the quality will exceed that of many places marked “Hotel”. At all levels, expect to find a family personalized feeling in most place to stay around the Araucanía Andina.
