Araucanía Coast Chile by All Southern Chile

The coastal zone lies 80 km to the West of Temuco. This includes the whole coastline of the Region IX and also the areas immediately inland including the communities of Carahue, Puerto Saavedra, Teodoro Schmidt and Toltén.

The main areas of urban populations are Carahue and Puerto Saavedra.

The coastal zone has not been highly developed yet for tourism, but it has many attractive features which make it a must: the area of the Budi salt-water lake, the mouths of the Tolten, the Imperial rivers, and the coastal flora and fauna, along with Mapuche communities and their complex cultural traditions.

Simply one of the greatest things about this area is the thousands of miles of untouched beaches. It has the feel of northern California, without the people, the prices, or the pollution.

Just some of the beaches are: Boca Budi, Playa Blanca, Agua de las Niñas, Barra Toltén, Casa de Piedra, El Arrayan, Hueñalihuen, Lobería, Los Obispos, Maule, Moncul, Nigue Norte, Porma, and Paucho.

For both a touch of old Chile, and some great food, the fishing villages along this route are priceless. A few to keep in mind are: La Barra, Nehuentué, Queule Port.

The future holds great things for this area. The new coastal highway (under construction) promises to be one of the greatest trips in the Americas. This new road will stretch from Concepción to Puerto Montt, along the Pacific coast. You can access the new coastal highway from Puerto Saavedra going to Tranapuente (about 38 km). This first stage is nearly complete. The entire project, when finished, will cover the entire Chilean coast from the Northern most city to the tip Southern Chile.
