Lake Budi | Lago Budi guide on the Araucanía coast of Chile by All Southern Chile
The areas surrounding Lake Budi ( Lago Budi ), including Boca Budi and Puerto Saavedra on the coast, do not seem to properly fit into our Arucunia Costa section of Chile. Traveling to lake Budi from Temuco, also includes several points inland that are not really part of the Coast. To visit Lago Budi from Temuco, there are several towns and places of interest along the way you would have to pass through to get to Lake Budi. For instance, Nueve Imperial and Carahue, are both major transit points with things of interest of their own. Thus, we have set the entire Lago Budi route off into its own section to emphasis this spectacular destination.

The Scientific and Historical Importance of Lago Budi
This entire section of the Southern Chilean Coast was wiped out by one of the largest tidal wave or tsunami in recorded history during the 1960's. The town and communities along this portion of the coast were for the most part rebuilt on the exact same location. This makes the entire area a fascinating historical and anthropological site. The Lake itself is the only Salt water lake in South America, with hundreds of unique species of flora and fauna. There is plenty to also occupy paleontologist, as finds are frequently uncovered in the area and little in the way of long term surveys have been conducted. The inhabitants around the lake are mostly of indigenous Mapuche decent, with a strong sense of cultural preservation. For both the serious and not so serious scientist, this entire area is a mostly unexplored destination with a depth and breadth of scientific significance that is hard to match in a single location in South America. Did we mention that the whole area is just simply beautiful? Well, we will.

There is perhaps fifty to a hundred steam engines
scattered throughout Carahue (that we found).
|
Southern Chile's history is sometimes
found in some strange places. About 35 minutes outside of Temuco, on
the main road to the coast and Lake Budi, the small town of Carahue
would strike any passerby as just another Southern Chilean town.
However, you can not pass through this town without running into an
old steam engine, literally at every turn and on every corner of the
town.

...the water from the tsunami suddenly raised the level of the lake,
but the water never receded back into the ocean...
| Lago Budi is one of those geological wonders of the World that defies proper description. As South America's only salt water lake, situated just a few Kilometers from the Pacific ocean, it is as if Lake Tahoe was directly on the California Coast. From the high ridges on the eastern side, you can look out over the lake to the ocean; you feel, as much as hear, the ocean surf crashing on the beach and echoing across Lago Budi. |

What we did not expect to find was one of the major sources of talent for Chile's national Olympic Kayak and Racing Canoe teams. | Just about every time we set out on one of our reconnaissance trips for allsouthernchile.com, we encounter something new and surprising. This time we found something very surprising, in the very unlikely town of Nueva Imperial. While taking photos of the Cholchol River, we were suddenly struck by a racing canoe zipping under the bridge, then another and another. Everywhere we looked there were canoes and kayaks.

Getting there The closest major communities to the lake are Puerto Saavedra and Boca Budi. They are the jumping off points to the lake, and have the most tourist infrastructure. The hard top road turns to dirt road in Puerto Saavedra. The dirt road to the town of Boca Budi, just 2 km up the hill from Puerto Saavedra, is in excellent condition and buses run about every 30 min. Direct access to the Lake is either via a dirt road that splits from the road between Puerto Saavedra and Boca Budi (about 1 KM), or from a longer dirt road that passes through Carahue (about 30 km). The Boca Budi road is the fastest and recommended route to Lake Budi.

A canoe is really the best way to quietly insert yourself into the environment, without disrupting the birds and wildlife along Lago Budi. | Unique Nature and Culture are the two things that Lago Budi (Lake Budi) has in abundance. The preservation of both has in large part been an accident of geography, politics, and history; however, it has served to maintain both this great natural resource and the culture of the Mapuche Lafkenche Indians that call Lago Budi home. This is rapidly changing as transportation to the Lago Budi area improves. The Mapuche Lafkenche Indian community around Lago Budi have accepted this, and are now taking steps to protect themselves with widespread sustainable tourism and environmental projects to promote and protect the lake called the Nature and Ancient Culture Project.
