Chaiten (Chaitén) Patagonia Chile Travel Guide by All Southern Chile

Chaiten (Chaitén) Chile is the largest town in the Palena province of Chile's Patagonia, and the gateway to some the most incredible natural wonders in Chile and perhaps on Earth (seriously). Pumalin Park South, Futaleufú, Rio Negro, Rio Blanco, and the Termas El Amarillo are just a few of the major attraction within a few hours of Chaiten.

Chaitén is where if you want to visit this area you will either arrive to by plane, boat, or car. It has its own small fishing industry, but is more importantly rapidly developing its own tourism industry that is becoming more than an overnight stay to the more destinations of Futaleufú and Pumalin Park of Chilean Patagonia. Chaitén has banks, grocery stores, restaurants, along with many hotels and plenty of bed and breakfast type hostels that have been built to support the regional tourism industry. We urge you to spend a day or two getting to know Chaitén, even if you are passing through to some other destination in Patagonia. You might be surprised.

Southern Chile Volcano Disaster Relief Fund

On Friday, May 2nd the Chaiten volcano 10 kilometers from the town of Chaiten erupted in region X, Palena, in the Patagonia of Southern Chile. The volcanic activity forced the complete evacuation of the town of Chaiten and a partial evacuation of the town of Futaleufu. Read on for the latest on what we know, and how you can help.

Southern Chile Volcano Erupts

The long dormant Chaiten Volcano erupted about 10 kilometers from the town of Chaiten in the Chilean Patagonia. Volcanic ash was dumped on the town of Futaleufu and East of the Volcano, and in to nearby boarder towns in Argentina. This month All Southern Chile will run a series of articles on the town of Futaleufu and the surrounding area. We also hope to correct some misinformation that was initially reported internationally.
