Ski Centers
| One of the coolest things about living in or visiting Chile is the number of Ski resorts. Even the resorts near Santiago are relatively uncrowded by North American and European standards on a weekend or holiday. However, as you move further South, the Ski resorts start taking on a even greater air of privacy. For skiing off pista, Chile is simply one of the best places in the World. Even at the largest ski resorts, finding your own way down means simply skiing off the runs a few minutes or seconds to find untracked powder. For the adventurous, skilled, and of course a bit flush with cash, a helicopter lift can be arranged to one of the virgin peaks. |

Skiing in Chile is a bit different at times than places North of the Equator. As mentioned above, the crowds are small; but, also the prices are small too. A day out skiing, lunch, drinks, and ride will likely not set you back more than $50 for the day. If you are planning to stick around, a ski pass to your favorite ski area would reduce this even further. Of course the downside to this is that sometimes the infrastructure can also be a bit lacking. Do not expect a lot of wild bars and nightlife near many of the ski resorts. Sometimes, however the local towns will compensate for this too. |
| In terms of the quality of skiing, it is world class skiing in every sense. However, be advised that trail markings can be a bit loose form resort to resort. One ski resort's black diamond is another ski resort's bunny hill. At times the lifts can be short relative to what could be potentially be covered. This will change as the popularity of skiing picks up; still a relatively exclusive sport in Chile. Snowboarding is catching on quickly with younger people, and this is driving the expansion of resorts in Chile, along with the increase in foreigners. Lighted night skiing is also unheard of. Much skiing is done during the middle of the afternoon on some resorts, do to ice in the mornings. On others, do to low altitude, rain is an issue towards the bottoms of the runs, especially on low altitude volcanoes. |

All this said, there is a certain extra thrill added to skiing when you do it on one of the worlds most active volcanoes. Not to mention the thrill of dropping into a Volcanic Hot Spring with a Pisco Sour at the end of the day. Take Southern Chile's Ski resorts, and add them to Argentina Ski resorts just over the boarder, and Southern Chile becomes a super Ski Paradise.
If anyone comes across a Southern Chilean Ski resort or ski area not listed here, please let us know by email or the forum. New resorts, and many of the smaller ski areas , sometimes do not get onto the radar screen.
