Frutillar

theater-del-lagos-300The original German settlers of Frutillar brought with them a love of music from Europe, and transplanted a culture of music when they first built Frutillar along the shores of Lake LLanquihue in Southern Chile. Now through private benefactors, Frutillar has one of the largest and most modern concert halls in Chile called "Teatro del Lago" nearing completion. It is slated to formally open around July 2010. The theater is currently fully functional and is regularly hosting weekly concerts and cultural events, as the final touches are completed to the building's exterior. When completed, it will have the most advanced acoustical engineering of any theater in Chile.

The "Teatro del Lago" is more than a concert hall. It is a complete cultural center that stretches out from the shore over lake LLanquihue. It includes rotating national and international art exhibits and a cafe that directly faces the volcanoes. The cafe is an incredible place for a late afternoon cappuccino or glass of wine as the sunsets turn the volcano and lake rich shades of pink and orange. There is also a fully operational program to bring foreign and national musicians from around the World to Frutillar to not only perform concerts every week, but also to hold classes and seminars at the local schools to encourage the long tradition of music in the community. Frutillar also has one of the few dedicated music schools, which is quite an accomplishment for a town of only a few thousand along with strong music programs in all of the schools.

Frutillar has long hosted a yearly music festival in February to celebrate this proud tradition of music in the town. By summer 2010, the final touches will be put on the new concert hall which will be the new center of activities for the annuel Frutillar music festival.

Theater Del Lago to Make Frutillar Music Capital of Chile

One thing that many Cities and Towns lack in Chile is true sustained community wide commitment to cultural enrichment. Frutillar is one of the great exceptions to this in Southern Chile, with a long community tradition of music an arts dating back over a 150 years. The town is pervaded by sculptures dedicated to music, music schools, and musical symbols pop up on all the tourist trinkets.

The original German settlers of Frutillar brought with them a love of music from Europe, and transplanted a culture of music when they first built Frutillar along the shorts of Lake LLanquihue.
