The Theater del Lago (Teatro del Lago) Grand Opening had been highly anticipated by the community of Frutillar, and all of Chile for more than 12 years. The theater was funded and built exclusively with private funds and donations, and continues to operate under a private corporation with a none-profit component. Frutillar however did not have to wait for music. The theater has been in operation since the first concerts were held to inaugurate the completion of the foundation and concrete amphitheater that looks out over the lake. This was long before the roof was ever completed or construction of the main hall started. Ever since, international and Chilean artist have been performing in temporary quarters around the theater nearly every week.

That all finally has come to an end, with the official opening. The construction crews rushed the last month to clear the site, and there was very little sign on the day of the Grand Opening of anything that really remained to be completed. Most importantly the grand hall, with seating for over 1,200 people.

The thing that sets this concert hall apart, besides the spectacular view of the lake, was a clear intention to design the theater to be grand, but also intimate; no spectator is left out of the performance, even in the cheapest and most remote seats. The theater was fittingly designed in Germany, and the acoustics reflect the care and advanced engineering that went in to it.

During the afternoon Grand opening, Chile's Symphony Orchestra performed along with Chilean soprano Verónica Villarroel performed opera and jazz, and the Paquito D’ Rivera Quintet brought a cuban / Jazz sound.
