Lago Budi, Boca Budi, and Puerto Saavedra

This is definitely a Bed and Breakfast for a romantic getaway...

The view from the Boca Budi Resort in Chile, South AmericaBoca Budi is one incredible vista after another. They all capture your attention and draw you in, so that you never want to leave. If you head to the Araucanía coast, there is no missing the view from the Boca Budi resort perched on a hill overlooking the beach where Lake Budi ( Lago Budi ) flows into Chile's Southern Pacific Coast.
The Boca Budi resort on Chile's Southern Coast was started a little over 4 years ago be Paola Sanhueza Acuña, to develop the town of Boca Budi and Lake Budi ( Lago Budi ) into a real international tourist destination. Her project has definitely been a do it yourself operation from the start. She not only built an incredible hotel and restaurant, but the bus system for her workers and visitors to get to Boca Budi from Puerto Saavedra. She is now taking it one step further, buy opening a cafe and bar that will act as a visitor welcome point in the center of Puerto Saavedra for the Boca Budi resort, the Boca Budi Cafe.  The town of Boca Budi, is about 2 km over the hill from Puerto Saavedra. In total, Boca Budi is about 2 hours by bus from Temuco, and about 1 hour by car. It can easily be done in a day, but once you read the rest of the Article, you may not want to just go for the day.

The Boca Budi Resort:

The restaurant Boca Budi has some of the best food in IX region. The only competition is the El Criollito in Temuco, and there is a good reason for this. Paula is the daughter of owner of the El Criollito Restaurant in Temuco, Señora Ermelina Acuña Caro. Mom's standards of excellence and service pervades every part of Boca Budi, but with the vision of a new generation of entrepreneurship that really shows the potential of Southern Chile as a destination. In many ways, the Boca Budi is the Criollito, with a romantic setting on the ocean. The restaurant windows overlook the ocean, and the large deck is open on warmer days for enjoying lunch or an after dinner drink.

The Boca Budi Restaurant

The entire restaurant says, 'stay and enjoy yourself'. It is easy to forget that there is more to see and do in the area, and simply spend your entire afternoon lounging with a drink in the restaurant. There is a complete bar with some of Chile's best wines, beers, drinks and flavored liquors are served at the end of every meal. In the course of our visit, we have also discovered the family secret, or scandal, depending on your view. The seafood empandads at the Boca Budi are the best in Chile (don't tell mom).

Paula though has gone beyond mom's talent for service, in building a well integrate tourism industry all by herself.  Just slightly up the hill from the restaurant, is the Boca Budi Hotel. We can easily see how even people that just come for the day from Temuco, might enjoy their lunch a little too much and find themselves spending the night at the Hotel. Did we mention that this place is hard to leave?

This is definitely a Bed and Breakfast for a romantic getaway to rival some of the better places along the California or New England coasts of the United States. However, the setting of the Araucanía coast adds an air of adventure, with creature comforts.

Here is the catch. The best room, with the best view, runs 20,000 pesos a night including breakfast. As a newly created resort, Boca Budi wants to encourage people to try it. They want to build a long term reputation for quality and a list of clients that return year after year, and tell their friends. This puts the Boca Budi hotel within reach, even for the budget backpacker who wants to take a break from the Low end hostels and explore lake Budi and Puerto Savedra from the comfort of nice hotel.

Another feature of the Budi Resort is local tourism agency services. They can arrange for boat trips around Lago Budi or the coast. The owner Paula, can also book horse back rides, hiking trips around Lago Budi, and Mapuche Indian cultural tours to name a few. Any of the activities or places you find in this section of All Southern Chile, she can arrange for you.

One thing that we can say about the entire area is that it is mostly unexplored. The Lago Budi area is not very appealing to the typical Chilean tourist that would normally choose the nightlife of Pucón or Villarica. However, for foreigners this is simply one of the greatest unexplored jewels of Latin America.

How to get there:

There are a series of signs, with green arrows, as you enter the Puerto Saavedra  simply saying “Boca Budi Hotel”. There are also some standard tourist signs marking their way to Boca Budi. You want to ride the bus through town as far as the bus will take you, and get off at the foot of the hill. There is a small square, with a tourism office and information on one side. Directly across the street is the Boca Budi Cafe. There you can get more information on the Boca Budi resort, and wait for the bus to take you up the hill.  The bus ride direct from Temuco is about 1,400 pesos from the Rural bus station in Temuco. The bus ride up the hill is about 5-10 min, and is an incredible journey in itself.
