Puerto Varas is a bedroom community to Puerto Montt (about 20 min away), that has recently developed its own tourism industry including a casino and several 5 star hotels. Puerto Varas stretches along the lake Llanquihue, and includes several very well preserved national parks including the Osorno Volcano.
Central Puerto Varas has recently taken on more of tourist friendly
look, and of course whatever Puerto Varas lacks, the metropolis of
Puerto Montt can provide. Do not miss all there is to explore around Puerto Varas and Puerto Montt. Together they make one of the most important destinations in Southern Chile.

Maybe everyone I know is right—maybe I am nuts. A 13 hour plane ride, 8 hours of waiting in a Santiago bus terminal and a 12 hour bus ride all surrounded by people speaking in a language I can’t understand…what could possibly be worth it? What indeed! |

The Hotel Colonos Del Sur was a beautiful dark wood building...
 | The grand old lady is gone. The Colonos del Sur hotel, once a statement of luxury and ambience in Puerto Varas is no more. On the lakefront next to the casino, the hotel provided luxury accommodations for tourists for many years, but early in the morning of March 12, fire swept through the historic three story wooden building. Volunteer bomberos fought the fire from around 4AM with everything they had confining the fire to the upper stories. However, extensive smoke and water damage appear to have pretty well finished the destruction. |
