siete lagos or seven lakes region southern chile
The town of Panguipulli is the gateway to the Seven Lakes region of Southern Chile. The Chilean Seven Lakes region should not be confused with the Argentinean Seven Lakes region just over the mountains. Panguipulli has all marks of being the next Pucon, but is still holding on to that southern Chile friendly small town atmosphere.
Panguipulli is working hard to build a tourism industry, and all indications are that it is slated to be the next Pucon with several private and public development projects under way. There is also a good deal of smaller locally run tourism projects starting as the town slowly grows as a destination in its own right. villarrica volcano view from the seven lakes

This area has also been billed by the local tourism board as the “Ruta del Javali” or Route of The Wild Boar (A.K.A. fat free bacon with an attitude). This was just strange enough of an idea that we had to check out this bit of tourism marketing spin.
It seems the wild boar were brought in from Argentina for hunting many years ago, and they took hold to the point where they are now considered a nuisance animal. They have done serious damage to the local bird populations that nest on the ground because the boars like their eggs. There is currently no restriction on hunting them, either in the number that can be taken or the time of year. Panguipulli

Paguipulli is still a clean and friendly small southern Chilean town, situated on the shores of Lake Panguipulli. It has one of the more spectacular views of both the southern Chile's volcanoes including the Villarrica volcano to the northeast, and the dormant volcano Choshuenco and Lanin to the southeast. Panguipulli also sports one of the most spectacular sunsets we have seen in the southern Chile. The light reflects off the mountains and the volcanoes and turns them deep shades of purple and red that changes with every passing second.  church in panguipulli
