The Enco steamer was built in Bremmen Germany in 1907, and participated the World Wars as a German navy vessel . It was acquired by a company in Chile in the 1940's and used to transport people and supplies to communities on lake Calafquen and Panguipulli in southern Chile. The Enco Steamer Choshuenco
Before the road that connects Panguipulli and Choshuenco was built in the late 80's the fastest mean of transportation for the locals in the are was the Enco. The only other access was a long and dangerous trail crossing several mountains, and almost an impossible task during the winter months. The Enco had to fight many battles on the lake in the era before global warming and severe winters were still common. Choshuenco Enco Steamer
Lake Panguipulli Choshuenco
There are endless memories among the locals about the daily arrival of supplies from Panguipulli, specially those that helped them in surviving the rain and low temperatures.
Today you can see this piece of Southern Chile history on Choshuenco beach on the shore of Lake Panguipulli rusting away. Somehow it is a fitting resting place for such a ship, verses fate of most steam ships of the era that have been turned into scrap metal. Enco at Lake Panguipulli
Choshuenco
The Captain for many years was Mr. Mendez who still lives in Choshuenco. We hope to have an interview with him soon.
