What is the "South of Chile"? Geographical definitions used on allsouthernchile.com related to what is the "South of Chile", "Southern Chile" and the "Patagonia" explained. Defining the South of ChileWe define on allsouthernchile.com the “South of Chile” or “Southern Chile” as being all regions south of and including the Biobio or region VIII. Within the South of Chile in general, we then divide the south in to three major areas or territories as a convention. Southern Chile NorthThis would be all territory from region VIII otherwise known as the Biobio region to the city of Puerto Montt. We will often use “southern chile” to refer to the entire geographic area in the South of Chile, but for the most part use the terms "Southern Chile" in this more restrictive sense. The PatagoniaAlthough strictly speaking the Patagonia is in Southern Chile, and there is a Patagonia in Argentina, we by our own convention define Patagonia as all points South of Puerto Montt, excluding Chiloe. We believe the true Patagonia of southern Chile is in fact both regionally and cultural distinct, and because of the lack of roads it mostly Geographically isolated from the mainland of Southern Chile. Thus, out of respect to this distinct history and culture in the South of Chile, we believe it useful to categorize it separate from the South of Chile in General. The Island of ChiloeWe generally also treat the Island of Chiloe as a unique region or major area in the South of Chile. Chiloe is very much a country unto itself, and the people will often refer to themselves as a culture within a culture. So, although these regions are very much in the “South of Chile” and part of All Southern Chile, we try to give them all the respect they deserve and signal to our readers that the South of Chile is far more complex and rich than a simple blob on the map where people live. |
