The Carretera Austral in Patagonia, Chile was built in the 1980's and 90's by the Military under Pinochet's administration. It opened the region to commerce and tourism. The Austral changed the life of Chileans in the region in very significant ways forever. The Austral is one of the final legs in the construction of the Pan-American highway system that runs from North American to South America, and includes some of the most pristine land in the World. This section is dedicated to the Austral Highway, the people that live along it, and the communities that depend on it.

Chile has been trying to balance the
books for some time regarding the things that Pinochet did right and
wrong. Now that Pinochet is dead, the books are bound to get much
thicker. One of the things right he did, that few would dispute, was
send the military to build the Carretera Austral (A.K.A the
Pan-American Highway) across the Chilean Patagonia. The Austral
connected communities that had been left behind by the century's
advances in Technology. We would like to introduce you a few of the
wonders along this route through the Chilean Patagonia.
