National Parks and Reserves

One thing that Chile has taken increasingly seriously in the last few years are its natural Parks and Reserves. Unlike
many countries in Latin America and South America, that simply put up a
sign saying “national park”, Chile really does preserve its natural
heritage.

With
or without official government endorsement, many of the parks and
natural reserves also have a form of natural protection from
development and exploitation. They are situated on or near a volcano,
that tends to discourage big investment projects beyond a cabin or two.

Even
with the serious efforts of the Chilean government to protect its
parks, one of the greatest tragedies in Chile's park history occurred
when a European tourist's camp fire got out of control and burned a large part of the Torres del Paine national park. Another warning, that can never be repeated too much, is thus in order at this point, “please help protect these national treasures".

We need your help
We have included a list of parks and reserves that we know of in
Southern Chile. If anyone knows of an official park or reserve that we
have missed, please let us know in the forum. We would also like to
include any nature “areas” that are not officially recognized natural
reservations, but should also be included for their natural wonders.

We
will strive to make this section as up to date and as complete as
possible. However, as this covers a vast area we would appreciate any
help you could give us on the parks section of the forum. We would also
like to include information on the communities directly surrounding the
park, as they are the ones who can both benefit economically the most
from the parks and are in a position to best preserve them.
