The Southern Chile Environment
The environment in Southern Chile is
one of the most fragile and unique in the World. Just a look around
any of the other sections of All Southern Chile, should convince you that
the environment is one of southern Chile's two greatest asset; the other
is the People. We hope to collect together here as much information
as possible regarding the environment and environmental protection efforts in southern
Chile.

We would also like to extend an
invitation to any environmental organizations working in Southern
Chile to publish contact information, announcements, articles, or
press releases to Contact us. We would be happy to help spread the
word.
People are coming to southern Chile
because it is one of the last places in the World with a pristine
environment. We would like to stop southern Chile's environment from
being destroyed like many of the other places in the World.

For many months we have been following the progress of the "Patagonia sin Represas" movement in Southern Chile. The organization has launched a very strong Public relations campaign across Chile to fight the Endesa power company and others in the Chilean government that would destroy thousands of acres of the Baker and Rio Pascua river valleys in the Patagonia. This very misdirected attempt to solve Chile's power problems by building hydro electric dams and sending power all the way to Santiago has gained speed under President Bachelet's administration in Chile. We happened to come across the recent horseback protest on the road from the Balmaceda airport and as they marched through downtown Coyhaique towards the central square.

Global Warming is one of those things we tend to think about as
slowly happening over time in the background; well, at least until a
lake just disappears. That is what happened in the Chilean Patagonia
recently. A lake fed by a Glacier, suddenly just dried up over about
a month. We have reported on the big picture of Global Warming in
South America and Southern Chile before, but this is one of those
events everyone is perhaps a little to quick to blame on Global
warming. Well the lake is now returning. So was this a case of Global Warming in
Southern Chile?

The international Gold mining company Geocom Resources, along with Kinross Gold Corp., both United States based companies are quietly buying up the mineral rights to the Espolon Valley in the heart of the Chilean Patagonia totaling over 91,000 hectares (353 square miles), with over 318 claims in the region X. We are closely watching these developments as Gold mining operations have the potential for incredible environmental devastation, even under the closest regulation. We need your help to insure the environmental assault on South America's Patagonia is brought to the full light of day. We even have a simple email in both Spanish and English prepared for you to help us let everyone know.

They are not building a Chilean autobahn in any sense.
The Chilean government has officially
announced plans to go ahead with the building of the road through
Douglas Tompkins' Pumalin Park in the Patagonia of Southern Chile.
The road will be built by the Chilean military. The government has
committed $100 million dollars to the construction project, and it
will include an easement for power transmission lines on the side of
the road. That is the bad news. There is some good news to go with
this announcement regarding the Pumalin Park road.

of All Southern Chile; however, in the case of this article from the
New York Times about Southern Chile's Environment and the dams we felt
that it was important. We have also opened a section dedicated to
environmental issues in Southern Chile, as we believe this topic is key to the future of Southern Chile and the Patagonia.

Southern Chile there is a classic environmental protection battle
taking place involving the typical suspects: progress, tradition, and
the environment. The potential victims list includes the people of
Futaleufú and Chaitén, Pumalin Park, and perhaps southern Chile's
future. However, a closer look shows that not everything is what it
seems. This is our first in a series of articles on this environmental
controversy in Southern Chile. |
