Villarrica Chile

Villarrica is the town on the shores of Lake Villarrica, opposite the more famous Pucón (about 30 min away by car) on the other side of the Lake. Villarrica is still a relatively rural town, but benefits economically from Pucón's tourist success. More recently, the land boom of Pucón has begun to poor over to Villarrica as more permanent residents move into the area, including many foreigners, and demand more of a city infrastructure such as stores, shops, and restaurants.
	Villarrica is also much older and better established than Pucón, in many respects, do to the luck of its geographic location relative to the Volcano. Pucón was all but wiped off the map by an eruption of the Villarrica volcano during the 1960's.
During the summer invasion of tourist, many locals leave the area and rent out there houses to tourist. With a little bit of planning and care, Villarrica is an excellent alternative to Pucón in the summers, with deep discounts in relation to the wild streets of Pucón. All the nightlife of Pucón can still be had with a cheap bus ride or a “collectivo”. Never the less, for the entire area surrounding the lake, it is well worth the effort to make long term reservations if you plan to stay any length of time in the area around January or February.
