One of the benefits of living in a city the size of Temuco in Southern Chile is having a real Shopping Mall. The Portal Temuco Mall is new in Temuco and is the ultimate for multitasking. Where else will you find a place to shop, eat, relax, see a movie, bowl, cut your hair, and have your car washed. It is small and personal compared to the mega malls in Santiago or Buenos Aires. If you are wondering where to find ice cream in Temuco that is actually worth the calories your search is over. Opened in April 2009 “Selva Negra” sells excellent home made ice cream by the scoop or kilo. This is not a highly glamorous place to sit and take in the atmosphere but you can enjoy a no frills (no silly toppings either) scoop after school or take home larger quantities for a very good price. The name is “Helados Artesanales” which translates to hand crafted ice cream. The owners are from Chile and Germany and learned the art of making ice cream in Argentina at the “Tante Frida” in Bariloche. They had a store in Argentina and many Chilenos frequented the shop. They then decided to relocate to Temuco and opened a small store in Barrio Ingles.
