As good as the bus systems are in
Southern Chile, they just can not compete with the experience of
riding a train through this incredible Southern landscape. The
highways in Southern Chile have a tendency to run through rather
industrial and ugly parts of the South. The train on the other hand
tends to wonder along through the countryside, revealing some
incredible sites that might have been missed by taking a Tur bus in
Southern Chile. One of the most spectacular runs is between Temuco
and Valdivia. This line continues on to Puerto Montt , the southern
most stop on the rail lines in Chile.

| Colectivos One of the more uniquely Chilean forms of transportation is the colectivos. Essentially a systems of taxi drivers that drive a set routes all day car pooling riders. They are one of the better deals, especially in more rural areas where taxis are limited and expensive relative to the price of a taxi in Santiago. Jumping in a colectivo can also be a great source of information, as the riders and drivers pool their knowledge of the area to answer whatever question you might have. | |

Probably the best alternative, if you want to explore the more remote areas of Southern Chile is renting a car. Public transportation is not bad at all. It is frequent, safe and most of the time reliable; however, you do have to fight to constantly get the proper information from the locals to find the right buses. Even in Spanish, Chileans have are not very good at explaining things; when giving directions, they are the worst. Sometimes, it is more than a little difficult to get the right directions for those locations All Southern Chile would call “off the tourist map”. Thus, one of the best ways to get there in Southern Chile is to rent a car.

Recently they bought some trains from Spain, and like the Conquistadors before them, it was not the best of deals for Chile. Don't get me wrong, I am a super fan of trains. I have ridden trains in at least 20 countries. I have ridden trains throughout Argentina, Mexico, China, the Western United States, and most of Europe. Some good, some bad, all very interesting. I find Trains simply relaxing, and I rarely get off a train with jetlag. What I normally do leave a train with is a lot more friends and a feeling I really got to know the country, even if the train never stopped. So, it just seems a perfect match would be a place as beautiful as Southern Chile and a train to cross it. You can take a train across Southern Chile, sort of, if your patient. | | |
